Laundry Cleaner

My friend Erin gave me this recipe for home made laundry detergent.
1 box borax
1 box Arm and Hammer Washing soda (not baking soda)
3 bars fels naptha (bar of washing soap)

Using cheese grater, grate 3 bars of fels naptha, mix together with the borax, and arm&hammer washing soap. Store in an airtight container.
Its just that easy!

Erin suggest using only 1 Tblsp of the powdered mix per load. I did 2 loads of laundry this morning just to try it, it works great! I did use a little more then 1 Tblsp but I am washing extra large loads of laundry. I bought all the ingredients at Walmart. They were in the Laundry soap area all right next to each other on the shelf.  It cost me around $8.00. I am curious to see how long it last. I will let you know!

Do you have any home-made cleaning products you have tried and care to share? Did it turn out how you thought it would or was it a flop?

  1. I am a fan of using Water, Vinegar, dish soap and tea tree oil as an all purpose cleaner. I don't really measure it anymore, but I ust re-purpose an old cleaning bottle and fill it 3/4's full of warm water, then fill the remaining (minus a couple inches) of white Vinegar, and I add about a tbls of dish soap (I use non anti-bacterial), and about 15 drops of tea tree (which is a natural anti-bacterial). It lasts me a good amount of time. It does not have any harsh chemicals. and I have been using it for 2 + years, and we have been very healthy! ;)

  2. I make this and it works great! I use the zote laundry bar and 2 Tbs per load. Also, when I grate the soap, I then run it through my food processor in batches with the borax and washing soda, it gives the laundry soap a more traditional soap look. A big batch like that lasts about 4 months. I keep a small lock and lock container on the dryer with enough for a month in it, and the rest in an ice cream bucket on a shelf. And, if I have a grounded 17 year old, he has to grate the soap. Lol I also make an excellent fake windex. Use a 32 oz bottle, add 1 oz of ammonia, 12 oz of isopropyl alcohol, mix and then fill the rest with water. I haven't bought windex in 4 years. I just started using a 409 style degreaser too. Use a 32 oz bottle, add 2 Tbs of borax (add a little more borax if you have hard water like I do)and 2 Tbs of dish washing liquid dish soap, fill the bottle a quarter of the way full and shake well until mixed, then fill with more water. It will bubble over the side, but don't stress it. Kristin M
